Caribbean Contest: Keeping Youth Out of Risk

The World Bank and the Commonwealth are joining forces to organize a Caribbean Regional Conference on Boys' Underachievement in Education to be held in Jamaica early 2009. The objective of the Conference is to exchange, share and analyse experiences that address boys' underachievement in education, and raise the debate on the issue among different stakeholders to a more technical and tangible level.

As a means to identify and promote activities that have demonstrated success in keeping youth out of risk, especially young men, a  Caribbean Contest: Keeping Youth Out of Risk will be launched on December 1st, 2008.

Participating stakeholders (Caribbean-wide national and local governmental ministries and offices, schools, universities, project units, NGOs, etc.) will have to submit an application following a simple format that emphasizes the lessons learned and replicability of certain elements. Examples of the kind of initiatives expected to compete include educational programs, youth job training, Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programs targeting youth, after-school activities, youth service programs, mentoring, special support to young entrepreneurs, etc.

Stakeholders responsible for the best proposals will have the opportunity to showcase their experiences through a development market place fair at the Conference in Jamaica.  In addition, the best practices identified will be summarized in a publication to be widely disseminated and promoted through printed materials and the Internet. Participating in the competition offers not only the potential for South-South knowledge sharing and learning, but also the opportunity to increase the visibility of the work of the experiences to the national, regional and international levels.

Information on the contest will be available shortly on the website: www.worldbank.org/lacgender.
