Poverty and Inequality

  • Brazil has a population of 182 million.
  • About 40 million people live on less than US$2 a day and 14.6 million people live on less than US$1 a day.
  • Brazil is second only to South Africa in a world ranking of income inequality.
  • The country’s poorest 20 percent earn 2.4 percent of Brazil’s income, while the richest 20 percent earn 63.2 percent.

Growth

  • GDP grew a strong 4.9 percent in 2004, the highest growth rate in ten years.
  • Brazil’s GDP reached US$604.9 billion in 2004.
  • In 2004, Brazil exported $96,5 billion and imported US$62.8 billion in goods and services.
  • The average income per capita in 2004 was US$3,090.

Brazil and the World Bank

  • In FY05, Brazil borrowed almost US$1.8 billion from the World Bank.
  • Since becoming a member of the World Bank in 1949, the Bank has supported more than 340 projects in Brazil, with a total of US$39.4 billion in loans – of which 55 projects are ongoing, making Brazil’s portfolio one of the largest in the Bank.
