March 29, 2007 -- Latin America and Caribbean Vice-President Pamela Cox visited BrasÃlia and Rio de Janeiro on March 26-29 to meet with key Brazilian Ministers, interact with country office staff and participate in a State Public Sector Management seminar that brought together 24 of the 27 Brazilian states.
Pamela Cox met with the Ministers of Finance, Social Development, Environment, Mines and Energy and Planning. The ministers explained Brazil's changing priorities and how the Bank remains a partner of choice to the Government.
In Rio, Pamela Cox met Governor Sérgio Cabral and his secretariat, in a very productive meeting on the partnership with the state and the Bank's value added. Governor Cabral and Secretary Joaquim Levy also explained Rio's public sector management program.
In addition to the high-level meetings, Ms. Cox also visited in BrasÃlia a community hospital and an NGO, both linked to Brazil's Bank-supported HIV/Aids program, and a carbon finance and CDM project in Nova Iguaçú, Rio de Janeiro. The NovaGerar project was the first of its king to receive UN accreditation in the world, and is considered an international best practice of solid waste treatment. The project also had important social impacts, giving jobs to a community of former trash scavengers who lived on the open-air dump.
In BrasÃlia, Ms. Cox explained how the changing Brazil program fits in the region as a whole, answered questions and presented 10 year and spot awards to staff.
