"To fight poverty with passion and professionalism for lasting results. To help people help themselves and their environment by providing resources, sharing knowledge, building capacity, and forging partnerships in the public and private sectors".
Conceived in 1944 to reconstruct war-torn Europe, the World Bank Group has evolved into one of the world’s largest sources of development assistance, with a mission of fighting poverty with passion by helping people help themselves.
The World Bank Group, also referred to as the Bank Group, is one of the world’s largest sources of funding and knowledge for developing countries. The World Bank Group is an international inter-governmental organization (IGO) which main focus is helping the poorest people and the poorest countries. Through its five institutions, the Bank Group uses financial resources and extensive experience to help developing countries reduce poverty, increase economic growth, and improve the quality of life.
The Bank Group is managed by its member countries (borrowers, lenders, and donors), whose representatives maintain offices at the Bank Group’s headquarters in Washington, DC. Many developing countries use Bank Group assistance ranging from loans and grants to technical assistance and policy advice.
All Bank Group efforts are coordinated with a wide range of partners, including government agencies, civil society organizations (CSOs), other aid agencies, and the private sector. Over the past 20 years, the Bank Group’s focus has changed, and so has its approach. Issues related to gender, community-driven development, and indigenous peoples are now integral to the Bank Group’s work.
