World Bank Statement

BOGOTA, January 14, 2011 - The World Bank is deeply concerned regarding the recent events in Cartagena, Colombia, involving the installation of a submarine outfall, a component of a project that is partially financed by the World Bank and implemented by Aguas de Cartagena (ACUACAR). The Bank has expressed its readiness to help find a quick and viable solution to this matter.

The Cartagena Water Supply, Sewerage and Environmental Management Project has significantly improved the provision of water and sanitation services in the District of Cartagena and has helped ACUACAR achieve potable water coverage for 99.9% of the inhabitants of Cartagena and increased sewage coverage to 86% of the population, directly benefiting 255,800 people with new sewage connections.

Given the gravity of the situation, the World Bank is undertaking a complete review of the situation.

The World Bank will continue to help the authorities of the District of Cartagena, the Central Government and ACUACAR to find a solution in the shortest time possible.
