The World Bank has strengthened emphasis on working with government, communities, and other partners to ensure that support benefits Costa Rica's overall development. The following are some examples where assistance has resulted in a positive impact on the ground.
Health | Environment
Health
The Health Sector Reform Project in Costa Rica directly contributed to extending primary care to nearly 100 percent of the population; reducing the demand for hospitalization in areas of avoidable morbidity, such as acute respiratory infections and diarrhea; as well as reducing infant mortality from 14 to 10.8 per 1,000 live births over the life of the project. Additionally, the project reduced the hospital infection rate from over 15 percent in 1995 to just under 6 percent in 2002 through improved monitoring and evaluation under the management agreements and the development of quality assurance mechanisms.
Environment
The Costa Rica Ecomarkets Project is one of the first Bank projects to put in place arrangements involving payments for ecological services. The program provides financial incentives to small and medium-sized landowners to conserve primary forests, encourage sustainable management of secondary forests, and promote reforestation efforts throughout Costa Rica.
The five-year project -still under implementation- seeks to protect up to 100,000 hectares of forests across Costa Rica and empower small- and medium-scale private land owners, especially women and indigenous groups, in the conservation and management of forest ecosystems and making choices that contribute to sustainable development.
