The World Bank’s annual worldwide contest for social projects, the Development Marketplace, has now come to Ecuador. This event represents an important achievement for the Ecuador program and its ongoing civil society work. The first event of its kind in the country, the contest aims to identify and support proposals to improve productivity and inclusion of the nation’s youth under the theme: “Youth Building Ecuador.”
Several studies produced by the World Bank in Ecuador have described the reality of different social groups, such as indigenous communities, people with disabilities, and youth. Youth represent one of every four Ecuadorians. This vital period of life is defined as the transition to adulthood and comprises the 13 to 29 age bracket. Nonetheless, this increasingly important demographic group still needs greater opportunities to ensure its participation and inclusion in development.
In recent years, the World Bank has supported initiatives led by young Ecuadorians, such as New Voices and the Small Grants Program for Civil Society, which have provided opportunities for sharing both knowledge and financial resources.
In the opinion of Dr. Pilar Larreamendi, Ecuador’s first Development Marketplace for youth is aligned with the World Bank’s regional strategy for civil society.

With prizes totaling over US$150,000 funded by the World Bank, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), this pioneering alliance hopes to continue holding this event in the future by attracting new sponsors.
