How is climate change impacting Latin America and the Caribbean? Major changes are already evident such as sea level and sea surface increases, acidification of oceans, transformation of coastal ecosystems, inland systems and mountainous areas, threats to health, climate variability, and an increase in hurricanes. To respond to climate change in the region, the WorldBank is implementing a strategy which focuses on the following areas:
Adaptation refers to efforts to protect against climate change impacts.
Mitigation aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions without negatively impacting those affected by it.
Sequestration is the capture of carbon dioxide in a manner that prevents it from being released into the atmosphere for a specified period of time.
Knowledge Sharing & Institutional Support strengthen institutional capacity to allow regional governments and civil society to play an active and influential role in the international climate agenda. They also improve access to knowledge and analysis to support planning for adaptation measures and funding.
