MECOVI: Regional Program of Technical Assistance for Improving the Surveys of Living Conditions (ISLC/MECOVI) Project in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) Availability of timely and reliable information on income distribution and living conditions of the population is an essential ingredient in formulating and designing social programs aimed at reducing poverty. At present a large number of household surveys are available in the Latin America & the Caribbean (LAC) region, but very few surveys are deemed to be satisfactory in possessing sufficient amount of information to permit meaningful poverty analysis and policy analysis.
To address this need, the World Bank joined its hands with IDB and UN-ECLAC in 1995 to prepare a regional program of technical assistance to strengthen the institutional capacity of statistical agencies of LAC region to carry out household surveys.
