Gladys Lopez-Acevedo is Senior Economist in the Poverty and Gender Group at the World Bank, which focuses on poverty, education, social protection, and labor markets in the Latin America region. Ms. Lopez Acevedo is coordinating, directing and overseeing the Programmatic Poverty Program for Mexico (2003-07) and the World Bank Evaluation work in Mexico and Colombia. She is leading an Institutional Development Grant to improve the Monitoring and Evaluation System at the Ministry of Social Development in Mexico. She is co-managing a Regional Study on Firm Innovation, Training, and Productivity. Ms. Lopez Acevedo has published many works in academic and policy literature including "Mexico: Poverty Assessment" (with Michael Walton); "Impact Evaluation of SME programs" (with Hong Tan); "Poverty in Latin America: Trends (1986-1998) and Determinants" (with Quentin Wodon)"; "In-Firm Training for the Knowledge Economy" (with Hong Tan); and "Globalization and Social Safety Nets in Asia-Pacific Region" (with Vicente Paqueo and Harry Patrinos). Ms. Lopez-Acevedo previously worked as Director of Social Programs at the Ministry of Finance in Mexico ( 1996-98). She also served as Deputy Director in the Economic Deregulation Unit at the Ministry of Economy (1988-91). She has been teaching economics in several well-known universities such as Instituto de Alta Direccion de Empresas (I.P.A.D.E), the Centro de Investigacion y Docencia Economica (C.I.D.E), and Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico (I.T.A.M). Ms. Lopez-Acevedo received a B.A in Economics (summa cum laude) from I.T.A.M (1987-91), and a Ph.D. in Economics from U.V.A (Snavely Prize for the best 1995 Ph.D Dissertation).
