Irene Clavijo comes from Bogotá, Colombia, where she studied Economics at Universidad de los Andes. After completing her B.A and M.A. she worked as a consultant for the World Bank office in Colombia on a project to improve the secondary education sector in Antioquia. She then worked as a research assistant at Fedesarrollo (a think-tank in Bogota) and was a teaching assistant in the Economics department at Los Andes University. Her main area of interest is applied microeconomics in the fields of social public policy, in particular poverty reduction and education.

As part of her extra-curricular activities she is member of Tierra Nativa, a group of young Colombians dedicated to providing low income children with the opportunity of traveling within their country so as to learn about Colombia and its diversity. The members of Tierra Nativa have also traveled across their country riding their bicycles, promoting a favorable image of Colombia. In 2005, they rode from Bogotá to Quito and then rowed in kayaks all the way to Leticia in the Amazon jungle.
