LGF Workshop: Project Design vs. Actual Performance and the Future for CDM Projects April 19, 2007 The World Bank's Landfill Gas (LFG) portfolio grew considerably in the past 4 years mainly due to the establishment of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and further enforcement of the Kyoto Protocol. The portfolio analysis suggests that overall projects are underperforming in terms of mass of methane destroyed in comparison with the models. To discuss the issues behind such underperformance and analyze actual and possible solutions to the problems, an international workshop titled “Landfill Gas Capture: Project Design vs. Actual Performance and the Future for CDM Projects” was organized by the Landfill Gas Initiative of the Latin America and the Caribbean Region (LCR) at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, D.C. on April 19, 2007. The workshop was the first of the kind to gather detailed data on LFG capture from the on-going projects and to compare the actual performances with the models used to design the project. Six LFG projects were presented as case studies with the topics such as modeling, engineering design, landfill operation, project performance, problems/issues faced and solutions implemented during the project life. A roundtable discussion formed by renowned LFG and SWM experts went over the cases presented and provided valuable technical insights on the problem/issues that these projects are facing and made recommendations to each of them.
This event was sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), World Bank’s LCR Sustainable Development Unit, Finance Economics and Urban Department and Carbon Finance Unit.
