EventADERASA: Training for Regulators in Latin America

Module 2 begins in September 2006

The Association of Water and Sanitation Regulators in Latin America (ADERASA) is launching a virtual course on the regulation of public services. The courses are divided into four modules:
    (1) monopoly, contract incentives and regulatory mechanisms;
    (2) tariff regulation, subsidies and social tariffs;
    (3) econometrics and benchmarking, regulatory applications; and
    (4) finance, cost of capital and regulatory accounting.

EventWorking with Small-Scale Private Service Providers (SPSPs) - Identifying Appropriate Policy and Regulatory Frameworks: The Role of SPSP Associations

The workshop brought together representatives of utilities, regulators and SPSPs in countries where research under the BNWP Policy Frameworks Initiative on SPSPs was conducted in June - August, 2005.
Countries represented at the workshop through these stakeholder groups included Argentina, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Pakistan, Paraguay, and the Philippines. The main purpose of the workshop was to serve as a forum for stakeholder groups to: (i) improve their knowledge and understanding of the challenges of small-scale service provision and learn lessons from experience in various countries; (ii) to identify through discussion and dialogue what actions can and should be taken to work with and optimize the role of SPSPs; (iii) to provide specialist inputs and contribute to the development of information and tools to guide practitioners working on this subject. onference on Investment Strategies and Policies for Water and Sanitation in Latin America

The conference on Investment Strategies and Policies for Water and Sanitation in Latin America was organized by AIDIS (Asociación Argentina de Ingeniería Sanitaria y Ciencias del Ambiente) Argentina and AFERAS (Asociación Federal de Entes Reguladores de Agua y Saneamiento), and was aimed at discussing three main issues: (i) the strategy for the expansion of drinkable water and sanitation services; (ii) the challenge to operate and maintain services while avoiding the deterioration of infrastructure, and (iii) the increase of access to water and sanitation services for the poor. The issues discussed were regarding country specific approaches to increase urban or rural coverage, sector financing and regulatory frameworks marked the discussion, which included representatives from most of Latin American countries, as well as sector specialists from donors and multilateral institutions.
