IN JUNE OF THIS YEAR, The World Bank serves as the chair for the sixteenth meeting of the Caribbean Group for Cooperation in Economic Development (CGCED). The CGCED was established in 1977 to provide a single forum for policy makers in the Caribbean countries, given their shared interests and to maintain a direct dialogue with the international donor community. CGCED members include Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, The Bahamas, The Dominican Republic, and Trinidad and Tobago.

This selection from the World Bank's art collection samples the wide breadth of creativity in the Caribbean. Several of the artists featured here articulate contemporary directions in painting, such as the abstract works by Ronald Mevs of Haiti. By contrast, Prefete Duffaut's panoramic harbour-view is a refined and elegant example of Haiti's painting tradition. David Boxer of Jamaica is known as the first Jamaican-based artist to produce installation and video art and as Director Emeritus of the National Gallery of Jamaica. Annalee Davis of Barbados uses simple woodcut prints and direct images of houses and roots to explore what it means to be "uprooted" -- whether by choice or force -- and the struggle to find a sense of belonging in a changing world.

Ranging from dark, monochromatic prints to vivid, intense color, these works are life affirming -- simultaneously introspective and exuberant. Many of these visually beautiful paintings and prints examine difficult or painful themes. Yet, perhaps because of their aesthetically pleasing nature, they universally engage rather than alienate the viewer.

The Bank's art collection also includes important, large-scale works by Andrew Lyght of Guyana and Christopher Cozier of Trinidad, which may be viewed in the lobbies of the "H" and "I" buildings, respectively.

The World Bank Art program is pleased to present this exhibit in conjunction with the CGCED meeting and wishes to express its gratitude to Orsalia Kalantzopoulos, Country Director, Latin American and Caribbean region who proposed this exhibit and for her efforts on behalf of the visual arts at the World Bank and Maria del Carmen Cossu of the World Bank Art Program for coordinating this exhibit.
