1. “Caribbean News” will serve as a new and dynamic avenue of communication and information sharing between the World Bank’s Caribbean Unit and the stakeholders in the 15 countries we serve”, says Caroline Anstey in the introduction by the Director.  More

2. “Without vision,” said Lincoln Lewis, President of the Caribbean Congress of Labour (CCL), “the people perish.”  Where once it was the role of the labor movement in the Caribbean to provide such vision, now it requires a meeting of minds of labor, the private sector, government, civil society and the international institutions  - Caribbean Congress of Labour met with the World Bank (WB), the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)

3. Welcoming the election of President-elect René Préval and expressing appreciation to the Haitian people, Haiti donors met in Washington, DC.  Donors also underscored the importance of the newly elected authorities’ commitment to consolidating democracy, good governance, political dialogue and national reconciliation.

4. According to Poverty Reduction and Growth: Virtuous and Vicious Circles, a new World Bank Report, while growth is key for poverty reduction, poverty itself is hampering the achievement of high and sustained growth rates in Latin America and the Caribbean, which remains one of the most unequal regions in the world with close to a fourth of the population living on less than US$2.00 a day.   More 

5. World Bank Vice President for Latin America and the Caribbean, Pamela Cox, visits the Dominican Republic  More 

6.Jamaica has identified inner-city renewal – with a focus on crime and violence prevention – as a key priority.  We hope this new program will not only help renew Jamaica’s inner cities, but will also improve the lives of poor Jamaicans by improving basic services.”  said Caroline Anstey, as the World Bank approves $29.3 million to improve the quality of life in inner city communities in Jamaica   More

7. US$25 million approved by the World Bank for Youth Development Program in the Dominican Republic.  The new program will assist the Government to improve outreach efforts targeting disadvantaged out-of-school youth by strengthening program coordination, implementation and evaluation of the Secretary of Labor as well as the National Training Institute (INFOTEP).   More
