World AIDS Day 2007

Legal Aspects of HIV/AIDS - A Guide for Policy and Law Reform

Speaker:
Rudy Van Puymbroeck, Independent Adviser on Health Law & International Development and Adjunct Faculty, Georgetown University

Moderator:
Jaap A. van Opstal, LEGFI

Effective action against HIV and AIDS goes beyond medical care and public health.  Legal reforms to support more effective HIV responses cut across many sectors of economic and social activity and a wide spectrum of laws and regulations.  Socio-economic and cultural conditions and institutions may foster stigma, discrimination, marginalization and exclusion of people living with HIV and other vulnerable groups, contributing to the spread of HIV/AIDS.

The seminar will be based on the book "Legal Aspects of HIV/AIDS" which covers 65 topics.  A sample of topics in the areas of public health policies, criminal law, vulnerable groups, and access to medicines will be discussed.
