| ANALYTICAL AND ADVISORY SERVICES Adaptation Strategic Environmental Assessment of Coastal Zone in Yemen -- The study aims to: i) conduct a strategic environmental assessment (SEA) of the coastal zone of Yemen to inform the policy, regulatory and institutional frameworks for coastal planning; ii) contribute to the formulation of the legal framework for integrated coastal management; and iii) bring into consideration in these frameworks the environmental and social benefits associated with the important ecosystems along the coast and the impacts of climate change on these systems. Results of the SEA will help ensure that current and proposed coastal management is undertaken within a broader sustainable development policy and harmonized with climate considerations from the outset to make the development climate-proofed, and will help the coastal communities understand and adapt to the adverse impacts of climate change through strengthening capacity at national and local levels. Climate Change Scenarios for the Republic of Yemen This study summarizes recent climate trends and evaluates the applicability to Yemen of downscaling techniques for the development of climate change projections relevant to the water resource sector; develops illustrative climate change projections for Yemen based on a statistical downscaling technique; and reviews scenarios obtained from other techniques to frame the uncertainty surrounding regional climate change projections for Yemen. Assessing Local Communities and Household Resiliences to Adapt to Climate Change in Rainfed Areas of Yemen The project will prepare a diagnostic of terrace maintenance and environmental management and will carry out an impact analysis of the Rainfed Agricultural and Livestock Project’ (RALP) soil conservation and water harvesting to assist the Government of Yemen in developing coping and adaptive capacity to respond to the changing climate. PROJECTS Mitigation/ Carbon Finance Mocha Wind Park Project  – The objective of the proposed project is two fold: (i) to demonstrate the operational feasibility of wind power by implementing the first wind power development project at Al Mokha in Yemen; and (ii) to add 60 MW of clean energy to the national Public Electricity Corporation (PEC) grid. Loss Reduction Project– This project intends to utilize technologies or measures to improve the energy efficiency of the electricity or district heating transmission and distribution system in Yemen by up to the equivalent of 60 GWhe per year, as a way to reduce the sector contribution to the emissions of greenhouse gases. Adaptation Adaptation to Climate Change Using Agrobiodiversity Resources in the Rainfed Highlands of Yemen – The project objective is to enhance coping strategies for adaptation to climate change for farmers who rely on rainfed agriculture in the Yemen highlands, through the conservation and utilization of biodiversity important to agriculture and associated local traditional knowledge. The project will apply a two pronged strategy to adapt to changes in climatic patterns. First, the local agrobiodiversity will be conserved, and associated local knowledge on the adaptive characteristics of the local landraces and their wild relatives documented. Second, based on the development of predictive climatic models, a range of coping mechanisms will be developed and piloted to reduce the vulnerability of farmers to future climatic shocks. The project is under preparation and has received funding from GEF, PHRD Climate Change Initiatives, and JSDF Seed Grant. |
