Overview

Algeria joined the World Bank in 1963. Since then, the focus of World Bank assistance  has been to foster sustainable economic growth and reduce poverty in the country. 

World Bank Country Assistance Strategy (CAS)

In June 2003, the World Bank adopted its new Country Assistance Strategy for Algeria covering the period 2003 - 2005.  The CAS, developed in close partnership with the Government of Algeria, serves as a roadmap for World Bank assistance to the country. 

The main goal o f the CAS is to support government reforms through a program of analytical and advisory services, institutional capacitybuilding, and demand driven lending, IFC financing, and/or risk mitigation through structured loans, hedging products, and guarantees.

Loans and Grants

As of August 2006, the World Bank has financed 72 operations in the country for a total original commitment of US$5,912 million.
