Health: Health Rehabilitation Project  (US$25m). Improve emergency services in 9 hospitals (to ensure at least one well-equipped emergency unit per governorate), and provide 12 hospitals with basic medical equipment and drugs. (more).    Emergency Disabilities Project (US$19.5m). Reduce the burden of the disabled by helping Iraq deevlop targeted and cost-effective rehabilitation services in a community setting. (more)

 Comm Infrastructure 

Community Infrastructure Rehabilitation Project ($20m). Twenty subprojects amounting to US$16m are completed in 11 governorates. The project has created an estimated 176,000 man-days of local employment and 70,000 hectares of irrigated areas, and benefitted about 121,000 beneficiaries. (more)

 

 

School Construction and Rehabilitation Project ($60m). Major rehabilitation of 133 schools is completed, benefiting 45,000 pupils and creating 3,000 construction jobs. Construction of 6 schools has been completed and 28 new schools are underway.  (more) The Supplemental Grant for Marshlands School Project  (US$6m) will provide additional funding to construct approximately 36 new schools in the Marshlands areas. (more).  The Textbook Provision Project ($40m) closed in December 2006 and financed more than 82 million textbooks benefiting 6 million students. Education:  The Emergency Textbook Provision project ($40m) closed in December 2006 and  financed more than 82 million textbooks benefiting 6 million primary and secondary school students. (more)

 

 

Capacity Building: The Second Capacity Building Project ($7m) aims to strengthen economic management and build institutional capacity needed to enable Iraq to shift to a diversified, market-driven economy; promote effective use of public resources, including Iraq's own as well as international aid and improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of public services.  The project directly benefits Iraqi officials and helps introduce crucial institutional strengthening and reform initiatives. (more).  The First Capacity Building Project (US$3.6m) closed in August 2004.

 

Water Supply and Sanitation Sector : The World Bank is financing two projects, Emergency Water, Sanitation and Urban Reconstruction ($ 110m) and Emergency Baghdad Water Supply and Sanitation ($ 65m). These projects aim to help restore basic water supply and sanitation services and urban services in the poorest areas of the country; reconstruct and rehabilitate existing water supply and sewerage collection facilities and by providing capacity building support. (more)

 

Social Protection : The  Emergency Social Protection Project ($8m), will establish a basic information system within MOLSA to record and process information on safety nets, to provide a foundation for policy design. Creating local employment is not a project objective (more)

The Emergency Household Survey & Policies Project ($6.6m) - has completed a twelve month cycle of fieldwork coverying 18,000 households in 18 governorates. (more)

PSD

The first Private Sector Development Project ($55 million)-installation of telecommunications infrastructure will create at least 1,000 short-term jobs; help create key building block necessary to develop the Iraqi private and financial sectors. The Bank is finalizing a US$9m additional financing package for the project to cover funding gap caused by cost increases and currency fluctuations. (more)

Environment : The Emergency Environment Management Project (US$5m) - is the first environmental operation in Iraq. The project aims to benefit every Iraqi citizen from the public health and environmental improvements that result from improved air and water quality.  The project has been facing considerable delays since effectiveness. The contract to purchase air quality monitoring has been signed, consultancy contract has suffered severe delays. (more) 

 

Electricity :  The Emergency Electricity Reconstruction Project (US$6m) - aims to help Iraq restore and improve electricity supply. Major impediment to the project has been lack of institutional capacity within the Ministry. Procurement is well advanced.  Training program is being prepared and hands-on training will be provided. (more)
