The objective of the Amman Solid Waste Management Project is to enhance the operational, financial, and environmental performance of Municipal Solid Waste Management (MSWM) in Amman. Specifically, the project will help: (i) environmentally upgrade and expand the existing municipal solid waste landfill to meet Amman City’s disposal needs and generate electricity while mitigating Green House Gases; and (ii) improve the cost effectiveness of the existing municipal solid waste collection and transport systems and improve overall cost recovery. The project will extend technical assistance and institutional support to the Greater Amman Municipality that focuses on performance and evaluation of solid waste services. It will also finance the construction of two new transfer stations, and the capacity expansion of the existing disposal facilities in Amman City. In addition, the project includes engineering services required to enhance the environmental and operational performance of existing disposal facilities. “This project will demonstrate how environmental challenges relating to solid waste management can be effectively met through enhanced performance, engineering and evaluation standards,” said Hedi Larbi, Country Director for Iraq, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. “The outcome of this project will have a significant and visible impact on livelihoods in one of the fastest growing urban centers across the MENA region,” he further added. The project design is consistent with the strategic objectives of the Jordan Country Assistance Strategy (CAS) (2006-10), focusing on supporting local development through capacity enhancement of municipalities and providing greater equity and transparency in operations and financial management.
