Statement by World Bank President Paul Wolfowitz After Leader of Opposition Meeting in Bangladesh

Available in: Bangla

Dhaka, Bangladesh, August 21, 2005

I am very pleased to visit Bangladesh, and am delighted to have the opportunity to meet with Sheikh Hasina, Honorable Leader of the Opposition.

Earlier today, I met with the Honorable Finance Minister and the Honorable Prime Minister. I commended both of them on the success already achieved by Bangladesh but also requested that special attention be paid to remaining challenges. Both discussions were fruitful and I will leave Bangladesh with a better understanding of its people and economy.

I have just completed a constructive dialogue with the Leader of the Opposition, Sheikh Hasina. Her party is working with others towards the benefit of Bangladesh.

I extend my sympathy to the families and victims of the gruesome grenade attack which took place one year ago; it is important that the perpetrators be brought to justice soon.

Bangladesh has made some noteworthy progress in health and education for the poor, particularly for women and girls. Much of that progress has been accomplished by elements of society acting on their own initiative. But much more could be accomplished if all Bangladeshis can unite for the common purpose of helping the poorest people of this country. I am here to ensure that the World Bank continues to assist Bangladesh in overcoming these challenges, and that we succeed in building on your success.

The World Bank intends to remain an active partner for Bangladesh in working to achieve its development goals.

Thank you very much.
