Will South Asia meet the Millennium Development Goals?

April 20, 2006 -- South Asian countries are on track to reduce poverty, according to the Global Monitoring Report on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), subtitled Strengthening Mutual Accountability – Aid, Trade and Governance, released today. The report highlights economic growth, better quality aid, and trade reforms, as well as governance as essential elements to achieve the MDGs.

The countries are roughly on track to meet the target of halving the share of the population living on under $1 a day by 2015. But progress on all human development goals has been too slow.

South Asian countries have made progress in improving infrastructure, but access to water, electricity, and telephones isn’t expanding fast enough to keep pace with the 2% population growth rate.
