Supporting Higher Education in Herat University

Over six thousand students currently study in Herat University. Till recently, the University’s 11 faculties sorely lacked basic equipment such as computers, projectors, laboratory equipment, and photocopying machines. With the Government unable to provide these facilities, the World Bank has stepped in to help the university solve its problems.

With Bank assistance, university teachers have been sent abroad for training, and foreign lecturers have been invited to teach, especially in the computer sciences department. Faculties have been provided with computers and other equipment such as chairs, tables, teaching materials, and laptops. This assistance has improved the quality of lectures and education delivered at the university, significantly benefiting the students.

Some 300 students are enrolled in the Science Faculty that was established three year ago. The Dean of the faculty, Abdul Rahman Mansoori, says: “After the Germans, the World Bank is our biggest supporter. It has provided our faculty with a large number of books, chairs, and tables. The books have helped our students significantly. We looking forward to receiving the laboratory equipment we have requested and setting up our laboratory soon.”
