Sri-Lanka: Renewable Energy for Rural Economic Development

Challenge:

The majority of the population in Sri Lanka, especially in rural areas, lacked access to electricity.

Example of Impact:

This project alone has financed the installation of 74,000 solar power systems in Sri Lanka, providing electricity to 3,200 households. Access to electricity has increased to 38% from 30% in 2002.

Approach:

• Increasing the proportion of renewable energy for better sustainability and environmental protection
• Utilizing off-grid renewable energy technologies to bring electricity to remote communities
• Promote private sector power generation from renewable energy resources for the main grid.

Challenges Remaining:

To create a system with the Government for ensuring sustainability of the renewable energy industry without external financing while maintaining the current momentum of renewable energy development.
