India: Tuberculosis Control Project

Challenge:

Tuberculosis was a dreaded disease causing the deaths of hundreds of thousands every year due to the lack of access to treatment.

Example of Impact:

Around one billion people in India now have access to treatment with 730 million living in areas covered by the World Bank financed project. The death rate for TB death rates have been reduced 7-fold with100,000 lives saved each year.

Approach:

• Private–Public Partnerships. The project has involved over 550 NGOs, more than 2,000 private practitioners, and over 80 corporate houses. More than 31,000 community volunteers provide assistance under the program.
• Free TB diagnosis and treatment. By providing free diagnostic and treatment services, through public or non-public institutions, the project has ensured availability of TB diagnosis and treatment to all citizens regardless of their economic status
• The program has been effective in developing a wide network of community volunteers, which has greatly boosted the effectiveness of TB control efforts.

Challenges Remaining:

While the international goals for TB case detection and cure have been reached for areas covered under the program, the follow-on project will focus on achieving these goals in all states and districts in the country.
