Challenge:
Seventy Percent of roads in Andhra Pradesh were in disrepair. With millions of people isolated due to the lack of bridges and proper infrastructure, a new system was needed to stimulate trade and transportation.
Example of Impact:
Over 2.6 million people now have reliable access to roads which have significantly improved their economic and social well-being.
Approach:
• The upgrading of over 2,900 km of unpaved rural roads to an all-weather type as well as the construction of 72 major bridges.
• The establishment of a computerized maintenance management system to actively monitor and maintain the network.
• Contributing to poverty reduction by promoting agriculture development - introducing cash crops to previously isolated areas.
Challenges Remaining:
The difficulty lies in expanding the project to all other states in order to create an effective nationwide road network that will boost transport capacity and reduce poverty.
