Challenge:

Bangladesh had one of the lowest number of telephone lines in the entire world: Only 0.26 telephones per 100 inhabitants.

Example of Impact:

Provides mobile phone service to approximately 50 million people in villages across the country.

Approach:

• Help promote private sector development.
• Create a low tariff strategy designed to compete directly with Bangladesh's national phone service.
• Focus on expanding both old and new cell phone coverage to reach the largest number of the population.

Challenges Remaining:

Since the cell phone initiative has been so successful in Bangladesh, the program intends to expand to other countries around the world.
