Afghanistan: Health Sector Project

Challenge:

Throughout areas across the country, many health services and clinics, including basic needs such as safe drinking water, have rarely been available to the people of Afghanistan. These circumstances could easily be addressed, but needed proper development implementation in both the health and environmental sectors.

Examples of Impact:

Eight regions across Afghanistan received new health clinics and facilities where there were none prior to the project.
• 23 health facilities have been introduced to the Kapisa province alone, providing pediatrics, surgery, and gynecology among others.
• Also in this community, more than half of all pregnant women now visit health facilities during pregnancy and delivery.

Approach:

• Establish health education in communities for families themselves to learn how they can decrease mortality from diarrhea and pneumonia.
• Establish Tuberculosis clinics to reduce the spread of this infectious communicable disease.

Challenges Remaining:

The medical services provided are still not enough to meet the people’s needs. While many more women now come to clinics for check ups and delivery, the situation differs widely from village to village.
