Challenges:
Afghanistan’s mountains, deserts, and arid climate make it an unforgiving place for agriculture. The program is assisting the country's Ministry of Energy and Water to rehabilitate dilapidated irrigation systems nationwide.
Examples of Impact:
• 267 subprojects have been completed.
• A new concrete canal intake and concrete lining of canal bed were constructed so that more water reaches the fields.
• In the Panjshir Province, for example, across Badqool village, an additional 30 hectares and over 2000 jerib of land have come under irrigation with this project.
Approach:
• Provide training to farmers regarding irrigation water management for better sustainability.
• Chose small to medium-scale infrastructure investment that can be easily self-managed by the farmers.
Challenges Remaining:
Despite serious security problems in some project areas and parts of the country, many emergency projects have been and are being successful.. However, some major problems still remain. The lack of government capacity has been the single most important factor hindering project implementation in Afghanistan.
