Sri Lanka Addressing the Needs of an Aging Population

Date: Tuesday, September 9, 2008

Time:  5.30 p.m.

Sri Lanka has a rapidly aging population and needs to consider implementing policies to avoid resultant major social and economic implications. The study is based on a survey of a representative sample of Sri Lankan elderly carried out by the World Bank in 2006. The focus is on four key areas connected to population aging, Informal support, Old age income support, Health care of old people and Labour market participation of old people. Each section of the report identifies key issues and proposes policy recommendations.
