Bhutan Country Partnership Strategy 2011-2014

December 22, 2010 - The new World Bank Country Partnership Strategy for Bhutan is aligned with the Government’s priorities and is underpinned by 'Gross National Happiness' (GNH). It is the philosophy which forms the cornerstone of Bhutan’s development and which Bhutan is succeeding in implementing.

About the Report

The Country Partnership Strategy is based on lessons learned from the previous Country Partnership Strategy and through feedback gained during broad-based consultations with the Royal Government, civil society, private sector, and other development partners.

Bhutan has made great progress in improving the living standards of its population over the past 30 years,” said Nicholas J. Krafft, World Bank Country Director for Bhutan. “Today Bhutan faces a new set of challenges as it experiences a rapid transition from a mostly rural, agrarian society to one characterized by increasing levels of education, shifting expectations of the people, and a larger number of young people who are looking for more opportunities."

This Country Partnership Strategy aims to address these challenges by working in partnership with the Royal Government, relying on the strong relationship the World Bank Group has built over many years.
