Afghanistan: Reliable data on HIV in Afghanistan is sparse but factors exist that put the country at risk for an expanded HIV epidemic. Bangladesh has a narrow window of opportunity to act decisively to prevent the spread of HIV among vulnerable groups. Bhutan: The Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan , though isolated geographically, is not impervious to HIV/AIDS. India is home to over 60% of Asia’s estimated HIV infections. India's HIV epidemic is highly heterogeneous and is concentrated in populations with high risk behavior. The Maldives took action against HIV/AIDS before the first domestic case was reported in 1987 and, as a result, has so far kept the threat to a minimum. Nepal is facing rapid increases in HIV prevalence among high risk groups such as sex workers and injecting drug users. Pakistan still has a window of opportunity to act decisively to prevent the spread of HIV. Sri Lanka has a relatively small number of people living with HIV/AIDS, but high-risk behaviors that contribute to the spread of HIV are prevalent. updated November 2006 |
