Sri Lanka Poverty Assessment “Engendering Growth with Equity: Opportunities and Challenges,” February 2007

Begins:   Feb 07, 2007
Ends:   Feb 07, 2007

The upcoming Sri Lanka Poverty Assessment titled "Engendering Growth with Equity: Opportunities and Challenges" analyzes the causes of poverty in Sri Lanka and identifies factors that have contributed to an increase in inequality over the past decade.

The report has been prepared in close partnership with the Government's Department of Census and Statistics (DCS).

The Sri Lanka Poverty Assessmentreport was made available to the public in February 2007.

Over the past three years, the Bank and the DCS collaborated to establish the official poverty line in the country based on the Household Income Expenditure Survey (2002). The two institutions then worked on analyzing the trends and patterns of poverty, including developing poverty maps using small area estimation techniques, creating capacity for GIS mapping, and developing a comprehensive household survey.
