Ends:   Mar 26, 2009

Organized by: Planning Commission, Indian Railways and The World Bank

Transport Sub Sector: Railways

Topic: Generating and Implementing Visionary Railway Strategies

Event Description

In a world facing the perils of climate change, is it advisable for today’s emerging economies to follow the American or European models of development, especially when it comes to transportation? What would happen if everyone on the planet used a fuel-guzzling, carbon-emitting car? And if this energy–intensive model is no longer sustainable, what new paradigm should late-blooming developing countries explore?

These and other ‘big picture’ questions were discussed at a recent international workshop organized by the India’s Planning Commission, Indian Railways, and the World Bank in New Delhi. The workshop brought together Indian officials and global experts to brainstorm on future directions for the Indian Railways––Asia’s largest railway system, which caters to the needs of world’s second most-populous country.

Recently, the government-owned Indian Railways has pulled off a remarkable turnaround; it has transformed from near-bankruptcy to commercial viability within a short span of five years by following the motto, “faster, heavier, and longer trains,” without compromising on safety.
