Figures for countries reporting government finance statistics to the IMF are published monthly in the International Finance Statistics (IFS) on an aggregated level, and on a detailed level in the Government Finance Statistical Yearbook (GFSY). Data are compiled and reported in national currency.
The IFS publication presents surplus/deficit, financing and debt data for central government only. The IFS presents data on a monthly basis (if the countries compile monthly GFS data), as well as on a yearly basis.
The GFSY presents annual data for all levels of government on more detailed level than the IFS. In addition to the ‘summary table’, GFSY includes alternative presentations; ‘Revenue and grants’, ‘Expenditure by function’, ‘Expenditure and lending minus repayments by economic type’, ‘Financing by type of debt holder’, ‘Financing by type of debt instrument’, Outstanding debt by type of debt holder’, ‘Outstanding debt by type of debt instrument’, and ‘Intergovernmental transfer payments classified by function’.
Unless otherwise stated in individual country notes, data published in the IFS and the GFSY are as reported by the countries.
The World Bank's Live Database (LDB) stores government finance statistics as reported by the country managements teams in the Bank.
GFS data in the World Banks and the IMF databases should be identical, as both organizations collect their data from the central banks or statistical offices in the member countries. However, some differences might exist due to vintage, and the presentation of data will not be idenntical.
