Money and Banking Statistics cover the financial sector, thus includes the banking system as well as other financial institutions like insurance companies and pension funds.

The financial survey covers the consolidated balance sheet for the entire financial sector. However, because money and banking statistics focuses on monetary measures, emphasis is placed on the monetary financial institutions - the monetary survey - since they are the creators of currency and transferable deposits (close substitutes to currency).
The monetary survey is the consolidated balance sheet of the monetary authorities and deposit money banks. Monetary authorities consist of the central bank and any government units carrying out some of the functions of the central bank – usually part of the treasury. Deposit money banks are all banks and similar financial institutions with applicable liabilities in the form of deposits - payable on demand - that can be transferred by check or otherwise used to make payments.
