System of National Accounts 1993

International standards for compiling National Accounts statistics are laid out in the System of National Accounts 1993 (93SNA) manual. This manual was prepared under the auspices of the Inter-Secretariat Working Group on National Accounts, and published jointly in 1993 by the Commission of the European Communities, the International Monetary Fund, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, United Nations, and the World Bank.

The 93SNA is the third edition of a national accounts manual. The first one was issued in 1953 by the United Nation, followed up with a new and extended version in 1968. 93SNA follows the same principles as the earlier versions, but do reflect the broadening of the experience and expertise underlying the SNA, the increasing harmony between the SNA and other major international statistical standards like Balance of Payments and Government Finance Statistics, the changing research agenda and the changes in the economic environment, for instance the appearance of new financial instruments.
