Technical Assistance through the General Data Dissemination System (GDDS)

The General Data Dissemination System (GDDS) was established by the IMF with support from the Development Data Group of the World Bank in 1997.

The GDDS aims to:

  • Encourage member countries to improve data quality
  • Provide a framework for evaluating needs for data improvement and setting priorities
  • Guide member countries in the dissemination to the public of comprehensive, timely, accessible, and reliable economic, financial, and socio-demographic statistics.

In 2001, the World Bank, in conjunction with the IMF, began implementing a project to help 9 (and later 14) countries in Anglophone Africa to put the guidelines of GDDS into practice, i.e. to formulate and implement plans for improvement in different areas of statistics. The IMF has been responsible for the financial and economic topics, and the World Bank has arranged technical assistance on socio-demographic topics covered by the system, included Population, Education, Health, Management, Justice and Security etc.

In 2006, the project was extended to include 22 countries. This second phase aims to
support the more effective design, implementation, and monitoring of macroeconomic policy and poverty reduction strategies by helping to strengthen the capacity of national statistical systems in participating countries. The project covers all Anglophone countries in sub-Saharan Africa and will close in June 2009.

The second phase is organized around 7 “modules”, i.e. Population, Health, Agriculture, Justice & Security, Management, Labor, and GIS. Countries have selected two modules each, and during Launch Workshops for each module, countries selected their three main priority areas on which technical assistance is required.
