The aim of the Module Justice and Security Statistics is to assist the participating countries in the following manner:

  • Improving the dissemination of crime and justice statistics;
  • Providing the statistical analysis needed;
  • Assisting in the design of a new system; and
  • Improvement to the existing ones.

The area of Crime, Justice and Security intends to cover the statistics produced by household surveys on crime, justice and public confidence, as well as the statistics produced by government agencies such as the police, prosecution authorities, judiciary, prisons systems and those coping with offenders in the community.

 

Five countries have chosen Justice and Security Statistics as subject for advice. Each of them identified its own priorities and developed a work program for data improvements that will be implemented throughout the life of the module.

Main outcomes:

  • Kenya has been assisted in the design of a new approach for their justice and security statistical system. A new and integrated J&S framework was developed which has led to major improvements in these government organizations.
  • In The Seychelles advice was given on the design and implementation of a victimization survey, and regarding other administrations like the police.
  • Mauritius was assisted regarding the improvement of the Police, Courts and Prison administrations.
  • Tanzania was assisted in the improvement of the Courts administrations.
