Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

The main purpose of the Module GIS is to assist regarding the implementation and use of a Geographical Information Systems. Specifically, this would mean:

  1. to provide the necessary expertise to enable countries to develop a GIS to compile, analyze and disseminate statistics with a spatial component;
  2. to enable countries to make use of new techniques for poverty mapping and the estimation of small area statistics.

Four countries have chosen GIS as the topic for advice.

Main outcomes:

  • Implementation of GIS software solutions currently being used in Malawi, Ghana, Seychelles and Zambia. Revision of census mapping methodologies currently being implemented in Ghana and Zambia. Training on how to use remote sensing products to assist in census mapping and GIS activities in these countries as well as in The Gambia.
  • Ghana was assisted in the design of a strategy to integrate GIS in their work.
  • Training was provided in Zambia for them to become able to use the GIS tool for the preparation of their census. A blue print was provided on how to use the hardware, software, data, people and methodology needed to implement a successful GIS within a statistical organization.
