“The project helped many data compilers and analysts to change their attitude towards data gathering, analysis, and dissemination. We now better understand the theoretical and practical requirements in the subject area.” Closing workshop participant The objective of the Labor Statistics Module is to assist in improving the coverage and quality of different aspects of Statistics on Labor, e.g. paid and unpaid, hidden and informal labor activities. Non-market activities and the informal sector are of utmost importance to Africa. The most effective means of collecting data on non-market activities and the informal sector is a labor force survey. Six countries have chosen Labor Statistics as subject for advice. Each of them identified its own priorities and developed a work program for data improvements that will be implemented throughout the life of the module. Main outcomes: All countries that participated in this module were trained in the design of a standalone Labor Force Survey (LFS). For Uganda, the advices were put into practice. Together with staff of UBOS a complete LFS has been designed, a sample framework elaborated, a new questionnaire developed. The questionnaire has been tested in surveys in preparation for the standalone LFS. In Liberia, a training course in sampling to conduct a LFS was provided. Swaziland was advised on their questionnaire and sampling strategy, the improved questionnaire was used in a survey. Sudan, Mozambique, Malawi have received various forms of assistance and training in the field of sampling and questionnaire design.
