Since FY03, the World Bank Group has sponsored an annual workplace giving program known as the Community Connections Campaign. The Campaign supports over 240 nonprofit organizations located in the Washington metropolitan area. It provides an effective way for Bank Group staff to give back to the community in which they live and work, and it helps bind Bank Group staff together as a community of people who care about those less fortunate. It also allows the Bank Group to be a “good neighbor” to the Washington metropolitan area, where it is the third largest private employer.
To oversee the funds raised via the Community Connections Campaign, the Bank Group established the World Bank Community Connections Fund – a nonprofit corporation organized for charitable purposes under section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service tax code. Donations made to WBCCF may be tax deductible for U.S. tax payers. In FY08, the Community Connections Campaign had unprecedented success, raising more than $970,000 through individual staff donations and special events organized by staff. The Bank Group provides a 50% corporate match for all funds raised under the Campaign, so the Campaign total in FY08 was actually nearly $1.5 million. One hundred percent of all contributions from staff go directly to the 240+ nonprofit organizations on the Campaign list. The World Bank Group underwrites all Campaign expenses. Staff can designate up to five organizations on the Campaign list to which they would like their donation to go. All non-designated contributions go to World Bank Community Connections Fund. The WBCCF Board of Directors (which is made up primarily of Bank retirees) then uses a variety of considerations for the allocation of such funds, including the level of staff interest, an assessment of the organization’s work, the likely impact of the allocation on the community, and so on.
