Historically, our grants program awarded small annual grants to nonprofit organizations that worked to improve the quality of life of the people and communities in the Greater Washington region and supported activities in the areas of education and youth services.
Latin American Youth Center (LAYC*)
LAYC's Promotores Pathways Program aims to help youth make a successful transition to adulthood by creating opportunities for youth to forge powerful relationships with Promotores who are committed to the "relentless pursuit" of the youth's success. In contrast to traditional case managers, Promotores work with youth across programs and services and over an extended period of time, anticipated to be an average of four-to-six years. This grant award supports the implementation of a three-year external evaluation of LAYC's Promotores Pathways Program (ie., process/formative evaluation describing components, structure, and implementation of the model and an outcome/impact/summative evaluation to determine the model's effectiveness in three key outcome areas: academics, employment, and healthy behaviors) and will be the first in the youth development field to document and analyze outcomes of a relationship-building, client management model.

Urban Institute (East of the River Initiative**)Â
In 2006, we began awarding larger grants over a multi-year period. As a result, we complemented our traditional grants program with a pilot multi-year initiative targeting Washington, DC's Wards 6, 7 and 8 an area east of the Anacostia River with high poverty rates. Our East of the River Initiative aims to better engage poor and underserved youth in areas where issues of poverty and inadequate educational opportunities are highest.
