IDA at Work: India

Country Study

With a population of just over 1 billion, of which about 300 million live below the poverty line, India is the largest democracy in the world and one of the most important countries in terms of meeting global development goals. In the past decade, India has accelerated economic growth, improved most MDGs, and maintained a vibrant democracy. It has also emerged as a global power—the fourth largest economy in purchasing power parity terms—and a leading player in information technology, telecommunications and business processes outsourcing.
