Background / General description:

The Office of the Executive Director (EDS13)wishes to recruit an experienced Economist to assist the Executive Director in his duties of overseeing, as a member of the Executive Boards, the general operations of the World Bank Group (WBG). The WBG Boards of Executive Directors consider and decide on the proposals made by the President of the WBG as they relate to IBRD loans and guarantees, IDA credits and grants, IFC investments, MIGA guarantees; and endorse the strategies and policies that impact the World Bank's general operations. Executive Directors are also responsible for representing the interests and concerns of their Constituency members to the Boards and the Bank’s management, as well as the interests and concerns of the Bank to their Constituency.

EDS13 is seeking candidates with a strong background and experience in Economics and Finance.  The position is located in Washington DC. 

Duties and Accountabilities: 

The selected candidate will be responsible for:

·         Assisting the Executive Director in carrying out his duties, including advising on matters related to the Bank’s sector strategies and development policy lending work.

·         Reviewing policy documents and helping reach decisions on the WBG loans, credits, grants, investments, and guarantees proposals, as well as on the broader strategic agenda for the Bank.

·         Reviewing the WBG’s administrative budget and annual report on the Bank's operations and policies.

·         Preparing and presenting briefings to the Executive Director on sensitive development policy issues and financial related matters.

·         Maintaining and further strengthening the relationship and policy dialogue on a broad range of economic and sectoral issues with Bank officials.

·         Developing and maintaining excellent Government relationships, interacting at the highest levels with the authorities of the EDS13 Constituency.

·         Undertaking ad hoc projects and any other assignment as deemed necessary or desirable by the Executive Director.

 Selection Criteria:

The selected candidate should meet the following criteria:

•                    Advanced degree in Economics, Finance, or related field. 

•                    A minimum of 5 years relevant work experience, including in developing or evaluating operational programs and strategies in economic management, public sector, governance, and /or poverty.

•                    Good knowledge of cross-sectoral issues and capacity to influence economic thinking on leading edge issues across a broad spectrum of economic policies.

•                    Broad understanding of the WBG development policies and of the full range of Bank Group financial and advisory tools, products, services, policies, and procedures.

•                    Familiarity with the Bank-wide Sector and Country Partnership strategies a plus.

•                    Strong diplomatic/interpersonal skills together with excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills. 

•                    Proficiency in French is highly desirable. Fluency in another major language (Portuguese and/or Spanish) would be an advantage.
