The World Bank Group has a Board of 25 Executive Directors. The latter are responsible for the conduct of the general operations of the Bank. They consider - and decide on - grant, investment, guarantee and credit proposals made by the President, and they decide on strategic, policy and budgetary issues that guide the general operations of the Bank. The Executive Directors have also the power to interpret the Articles of Agreement - and to select the President - of the WBG.

 

Each Executive Director fulfills a dual function as official of the Bank and as representative of the member countries (constituency) which have elected them. In that capacity the Executive Director represents and defends the interest of his/her constituency countries in their relation with the Bank. For that purpose, the Executive Director maintains a close relationship and dialogue with the capitals of his/her constituency. As official of the Bank, the Executive Director assumes a policy and fiduciary responsibility for the decisions taken in the bi-weekly Board discussion.

To fulfill his/her responsibilities, the Executive Director is seconded by an Alternate Executive Director and assisted by eight Senior Advisors and Advisors. The office of the Executive Director is completed by two Assistants.
