About the country

Tajikistan with an area of 143,000 square kilometers and a population of 7.3 million is located in Central Asia, sharing borders with China to the east, Afghanistan to the south, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and Uzbekistan to the west. Tajikistan comes from two tajik-persian words, namely “Tajik” and “istan,” which mean the “Land of the Tajiks”. Tajiks have historical and cultural roots to the region, going back as far as 4000 BC.

The Tajik territory served as the main linkage of the Silk Road. With its mountainous area, the country has one of the highest peaks of the world, the Ismoili Somoni Peak (7495m). Aluminum, cotton, agricultural and selected light industrial products are the country's main economic productions. As the country has about 70 percent of Central Asia's water resources, it has a comparative advantage in producing hydroelectricity. The country also has rich mineral resources.

Tajikistan regained independence in 1991, following the breakup of the former Soviet Union. The country is the process of transitioning from a planned - to a market - based economy. During the first 18 years of the transition, Tajikistan has achieved remarkable macroeconomic stability.
