About the country

Turkmenistan is located at the Eurasian crossroads, in the heart of Central Asia. Turkmenistan became an independent state in 1991 after the disintegration of the USSR and attained neutrality status, recognized by the United Nations Organization, five years later. Turkmenistan is a country of deserts and oases and has cultural traditions going back many centuries. The world's most ancient civilizations prospered on its territory. Turkmenistan possesses the world's fifth largest reserves of natural gas and substantial deposits of oil.

Turkmenistan and the World Bank Group (WBG) are working together to prepare a Country Strategy Note that will shape their medium-term cooperation programs including sector investments, technical assistance and capacity building support.
