About the country

The Republic of Uzbekistan is a large, landlocked and populous country located in the strategic heart of Central Asia. Uzbekistan declared its independence on September 1, 1991. A new constitution, declaring Uzbekistan a multiparty democracy and a presidential republic, was adopted in 1992.

Uzbekistan is an upper low income country and is well endowed with natural resources, including gas, various minerals, and agricultural land. It has recorded strong economic growth (above 7 % per year) over the past five years, which was supported by stable macroeconomic management, favorable terms of trade and substantial external financial flows (foreign direct investments and remittances). Uzbekistan is implementing gradual reforms towards an increasingly market-based economy and an improved business environment. The country has a positive trade balance.

Uzbekistan has a longstanding cooperation with the World Bank Group (WBG). In June 2008, a new Country Assistance Strategy was approved by the Board for the period 2008-2011. It focuses on four pillars: (i) enabling an environment for shared growth; (ii) increasing economic opportunities in rural areas; (iii) improving service delivery; and (iv) managing the provision of environmental and global goods. This assistance is fully aligned with the national Welfare Improvement Strategy.
