Foundation CEOs have indicated that their foundations can be very helpful to the formulation of projects and programs, if they are involved at the early stages of project conceptualization and preparation. Indeed, we are learning through research on best practices that Bank project managers find that foundations:
• inform development debates;
• provide country and sector specific expertise;
• engage the participation of local NGOs;
• possess flexibility to pilot innovative approaches; and
• mobilize resources.
Foundations are particularly interested in establishing more contact with country staff and sector managers and would welcome the opportunity to participate in consultations on regional and country levels. Therefore, to better facilitate Bank/Foundation relations, the Bank’s Foundations Team has compiled the attached list of international foundations such as the Ford, Rockefeller, MacArthur, Soros, and Kellogg Foundations, as well as many others, which have offices in developing countries. The names of the foundations on the list have been provided by the secretariats of the European Foundation Centre and the U.S. Council on Foundations.
While the names of foundation contact staff may change, we hope that this information will be useful to engage foundations in client countries in discussions on Bank projects and such key corporate priorities as the PRSPs,CASs, MDGs, and the CDF.
